Review: The Singles Game by Lauren Weisberger

Blurb from Goodreads:
The new novel from the New York Times bestselling author of The Devil Wears Prada and Revenge Wears Prada—a dishy tell-all about a beautiful tennis prodigy who, after changing coaches, suddenly makes headlines on and off the court.

Charlotte “Charlie” Silver has always been a good girl. She excelled at tennis early, coached by her father, a former player himself, and soon became one of the top juniors in the world. When she leaves UCLA—and breaks her boyfriend’s heart—to turn pro, Charlie joins the world’s best athletes who travel eleven months a year, competing without mercy for Grand Slam titles and Page Six headlines.

After Charlie suffers a disastrous loss and injury on Wimbledon’s Centre Court, she fires her longtime coach and hires Todd Feltner, a legend of the men’s tour, who is famous for grooming champions. Charlie is his first-ever female player, and he will not let her forget it. He is determined to change her good-girl image—both on the court and off—and transform her into a ruthless competitor who will not only win matches and climb the rankings, but also score magazine covers and seven-figure endorsement deals. Her not-so-secret affair with the hottest male player in the world, sexy Spaniard Marco Vallejo, has people whispering, and it seems like only a matter of time before the tabloids and gossip blogs close in on all the juicy details. Charlie’s ascension to the social throne parallels her rising rank on the women’s tour—but at a major price.
My Review:

I devoured this, seriously; I read it one day and could not put it down!  Isn't that the best feeling? And I love love loved the first 60-ish%.  At that point, however, I feel like the characters changed a bit?  I don't know that I can pinpoint it but I felt like Charlie and some of the other main characters became a bit inconsistent feeling to me in their words and actions and there was definitely a bit of unnecessary drama.  I also didn't love the ending although, in retrospect, it fits.  Putting all of that aside, though, this is such a fun book -- I'm not even the hugest tennis fan but it was still so much fun to imagine the perspective of a great player trying to become the best -- the traveling, the coaching, the tour all while still being 24 year old woman and having needs as a woman, not just physical but also mental.  I appreciated the dichotomy and all the little details.  I actually kind of already want to re-read this because it was just so refreshing and fun.  I will never be a star athlete or get to play Wimbledon but this book made me feel like I was there!

The Singles Game came out earlier this week on July 12, 2016, you can purchase HERE, and this one is such a fun read -- perfect for the pool or beach!
I did not leave high school every day at noon to train for six hours and do my homework by the light of the glove compartment on the way home from tournaments to give up.  I didn't miss movies and trips and proms and hanging at the mall and sleeping in and getting drunk and kissing boys to play round-robins at my local country club. And speaking of country clubs, I didn't ask my father to work day and night teaching rich middle-aged women and spoiled kids and rude bankers so I could bail the first time something got a little challenging.  And I sure didn't leave UCLA--the best year of my life-- to quit.  So while I have incredible respect for what you've accomplished in our profession, and I was planning to ask if you would consider coaching me, I will kindly ask from now on you keep your opinions to yourself.

  1. So happy to see you enjoyed this one. I didn't request it because I am so overloaded but I was interested in it with the tennis and because it was her. My library has it so I will definitely be checking it out. Great review!!

  2. Given the tennis gossip I've been reading recently, this feel very timely! Great review!

  3. I love that you were able to read this one so quickly. But gahhh that sucks that it started to fizzle out a little at the 60% mark. Still, I'll keep an eye out of this one.
    Lovely review, Eva!

  4. I actually do enjoy tennis, and so yeah, I think I might enjoy this one as well, Eva. Sorry there were some character inconsistencies, though! That is something that could put me off a bit, too.

  5. Sorry it didn't continue to be as fabulous as the first half but at least you still really enjoyed it and it had you hooked.

  6. I didn't know this was by the same author as The Devil Wears Prada! Unnecessary drama can totally bring a book down, so that's a shame it happened here :/

  7. I was actually of requesting the audiobook for this one. The feeling of flying through a book and reading it one day is unique. I love when I get to do that. Great review!

  8. I saw this one come through in an email, which is the first time I've seen it. I thought it looked like a fun book and the fact that you devoured it really makes me want to read it. Where is that clock-stopper?! I played tennis in high school and a few years after, so I think I could probably relate to the characters, too. I might put a hold on this one at the library.

  9. I do love it when I can't put a book down. This is very different from anything I'd think to pick up, and I'm not sure there's a romance, but I'm happy to hear you enjoyed it. Wonderful review! :)

  10. It's so interesting to see you say that you want to reread this one when you gave it 3.5 stars. For me, 3.5 is one that I definitely enjoyed but it's doubtful that it's going to ever be reread. It's not like I reread hardly ever but I tend to reserve rereads for 4-5 star reads. Too bad the last third veered into too much drama but still sounds like a really enjoyable read overall!

  11. I'm intrigued by this! I'm a little worried about your comment on the ending though. A good (and hopefully happy) ending is super important for me when it comes to books. I think I'll keep my eye on this one.

  12. Eva, you have no idea how many times I've opened up this link to finally comment and then lose my spirit of commenting. It sucks but I'm here now and I'm finally commenting! I had seen this book when I got the audiobook newsletter from S&S and I was very very interested in it but I kept thinking if I would be completely blown away by it and I didn't feel like I would so I just ignored it. Now, I'm interested! I mean, if it's good for the majority of the story, why not?!

I love this trope, sub-genre, setting: My Best Friend's Brother/My Brother's Best Friend

I Love This Trope, Sub-Genre, Setting is a new feature on my blog in which I discuss a trope, sub-genre or setting that I love and tell you about books that are shining examples of said trope, sub-genre or setting.  Feel free to play along and please let me know about your favorite books in this realm and whether you like this trope, sub-genre and/or setting as much as I do! Today I am spotlighting the trope of:  My Best Friend's Brother/My Brother's Best Friend , which I would define as any book where the heroine either has a crush on or falls for her brother's best friend or her best friend's brother. I have to confess that I love this trope in nearly all of its iterations!  I have a younger brother so I never got to crush on any of his friends but it's fun reading about that and it's equally as fun as reading about falling for your best friend's brother -- instant sisters!  I know there are a ton

Conversations With Myself (& Hopefully You): ARC Greed

This discussion is inspired by my feelings lately when reading and reviewing ARCs versus the feelings I had when I requested those same ARCs: ARC GREED ARC greed -- have we all experienced this?  What I even mean by this term is that I sometimes feel overwhelmed when looking at Netgalley and Edelweiss and  I sometimes over-request, if only because I can!  I get greedy when I see all the new and shiny ARCs available and I will sometimes request things that have even a hint of interest for me, not necessarily focusing only on those books that I really, really want.  The problem with this over-requesting and with getting greedy with requesting (and receiving) ARCs is when it comes time to read and review these ARCs.  Last month and this month, I have looked at my ARCs with a release date in each respective month and I just haven't wanted to read any of them.  I need to start asking myself -- If I was immediately approved for this ARC, would I read it right thi
