Review: Indie Darling by Lauren Nossett

Blurb from Goodreads:
A brilliant breakout novel from ITW Thriller Award–winning author Lauren Nossett—a mystery set in Nashville, where a Dolly Parton–loving private detective is drawn into the disappearance of an enigmatic pop star.

Nashville is a city of two faces, where the glitter often masks the grit.

Kelly Williams helps women. Sisters in search of lost siblings. Wives determined to uncover affairs. Daughters haunted by men lingering outside their windows. Clients trust her because she listens, she believes them, and over the years she’s honed a specialized skill set.

Kelly is a Dolly Parton–loving, sports-car-driving private investigator in Nashville, Tennessee. Her latest client, Sarah-Faith Owens, comes to her after receiving threatening messages. Something about the woman feels familiar, and Kelly realizes she’s Seraph, the magnetic, polarizing lead singer of the indie music sensation The Garden Snakes. With feminist anthems, cryptic lyric easter eggs, and an electrifying stage presence, Seraph has built a fiercely loyal following—and attracted a number of critics. At that level of fame, her stalker could be anyone.

Then, in the middle of a Nashville performance, Seraph is shot on stage—and the ambulance carrying her disappears. As the city reels and conspiracy theories swirl, Kelly is pulled into a dangerous web of secrets involving Seraph’s bandmates, her troubled past, and the high cost of stardom.

Propulsive and atmospheric, Indie Darling is both a page-turning mystery and a powerful meditation on art, obsession, and the perils of being a female artist in today’s celebrity-obsessed world.

This started off super interesting but it meandered a bit.  Had some thrilling bits and the end was not entirely expected.  I just wanted more dimension into Kelly's character - she seemed very one-dimensional when there was tons of time to develop her further.  Still, will try more from this author.  Very well written!

Indie Darling came out earlier this week on July 28, 2026 and you can purchase HERE.
It takes only a tenth of a second to make a first impression.
Literally the blink of an eye.
In that time, a person has already observed your posture, your clothes, your voice. They've noted whether you make eye contact and smile. They've appraised the state of your teeth, the color of your hair, the number of rings on your fingers, and the size.
Looks aren't important, but appearance is everything.
Small details can be the difference between love and loathing, friendship and animosity, and in some cases, even life and death.
And like my hero, Dolly Parton, I prefer to be presentable at all times. Did you know while filming 9 to 5, she never removed her wig? Not even when she was off set. Now that's commitment.

I love this trope, sub-genre, setting: My Best Friend's Brother/My Brother's Best Friend

I Love This Trope, Sub-Genre, Setting is a new feature on my blog in which I discuss a trope, sub-genre or setting that I love and tell you about books that are shining examples of said trope, sub-genre or setting.  Feel free to play along and please let me know about your favorite books in this realm and whether you like this trope, sub-genre and/or setting as much as I do! Today I am spotlighting the trope of:  My Best Friend's Brother/My Brother's Best Friend , which I would define as any book where the heroine either has a crush on or falls for her brother's best friend or her best friend's brother. I have to confess that I love this trope in nearly all of its iterations!  I have a younger brother so I never got to crush on any of his friends but it's fun reading about that and it's equally as fun as reading about falling for your best friend's brother -- instant sisters!  I know there are a ton...
