Review: When You Loved Me by Beatriz Williams

Blurb from Goodreads:
A young widow returns to her late father’s New England estate, only to be drawn into the hunt for the rumored pirate treasure that consumed his life, in this thrilling and moving novel from the New York Times bestselling author of Husbands & Lovers.

Local history insists that a legendary pirate buried his treasure somewhere beneath Windward, the decayed Cooper estate on Winthrop Island, but Lucy Cooper never trusted the fable that broke her family apart. When a widowed Lucy returns with her young daughter to grieve her estranged father, she discovers the property’s mired in debt she can't repay, and Ben Ressler has unexpectedly turned up on her doorstep.

Thirteen summers ago, a teenaged Lucy never meant to fall in love with Ben, a Dartmouth football star vacationing nearby at the Peabody estate, and the object of an all-consuming crush by Laura Peabody, Lucy’s best friend. Those few weeks were the best and worst of Lucy’s life, dooming her friendship with Laura. Now Ben’s returned to live quietly in the Peabodys’ caretaker lodge, after a fatal accident ended his dazzling NFL career. He’s also the last person who saw Lucy’s father alive.

As Lucy reconstructs her father’s troubling final days, she uncovers his research on the frozen winter of 1717, when a desperately wounded pirate sought refuge on Winthrop Island with an enigmatic healer. To Lucy, this history points the way to a different kind of how to heal from the fractures of the past and earn a second chance at love. But just as Lucy’s long-buried emotions sear to the surface, a shocking turn of events reveals that someone else on the island will do whatever it takes to claim the fabled plunder.

A timeless story of love and atonement, When You Loved Me maps both a centuries-old treasure hunt and the intimate territory of the human heart, weaving together past and present as only Beatriz Williams can.

My Review:

I love love love Beatriz Williams!  I'm already planning on catching up with these Winthrop Island books after I've read this one and maybe even re-reading my favorite (so far) - Husbands and Lovers!  I loved the dual timelines and historical aspect of this.  It had a nice little mystery too but, as always, great, complex characters and a romance that seems doomed but you want it more than anything anyway.  A great summer read!!

When You Loved Me comes out next week on June 23, 2026, and you can purchase HERE!
A large man, wearing a dark suit jacket over his gigantic shoulders and no tie. The column cuts off half his face. But there is a jaw like a chunk of granite.

Some thick, glossy hair the color of an Irish setter.

The shock hits me everywhere at once. My heartbeat stutters. Glass shatters at the ends of my nerves. My scalp buzzes, like when you see a ghost. The ghost of my Winthrop Island past.

The hair is too long, I tell myself. And he has a beard.

It's not him. It couldn't be him. In the first place, Ben Ressler would never set foot on Winthrop Island again.

The Peabodys wouldn't stand for it.

In the second place, why would Ben Ressler-of all people-turn up for my father's funeral?

Review: The Lost Letters from Martha's Vineyard by Michael Callahan

The Lost Letters from Martha's Vineyard by Michael Callahan Blurb from Goodreads : A tantalizing novel of two women bound by blood but divided by a long-buried secret, and the island that holds the key to the fateful summer that changed everything forever. In 1959, Hollywood ingenue Mercy Welles seems to have the world at her feet. Far removed from her Nebraska roots, she has crafted herself into a glamorous Oscar-nominated actress engaged to an up-and-coming director… Until she shockingly vanishes without a trace, just as her career is taking off. Almost sixty years later, Kit O’Neill, a junior television producer in Manhattan, is packing up her recently deceased grandmother’s attic, only to discover a long-lost box of souvenirs that reveal that the grandmother who raised her and her sister Claire was, in fact, the mysterious Mercy Welles. Put...
