Review: He Will Be My Ruin by K.A. Tucker

Blurb from Goodreads:
The USA TODAY bestselling author of the Ten Tiny Breaths and Burying Water series makes her suspense debut with this sexy, heartpounding story of a young woman determined to find justice after her best friend’s death, a story pulsing with the “intense, hot, emotional” (Colleen Hoover) writing that exhilarates her legions of fans.

A woman who almost had it all . . .

On the surface, Celine Gonzalez had everything a twenty-eight-year-old woman could want: a one-bedroom apartment on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, a job that (mostly) paid the bills, and an acceptance letter to the prestigious Hollingsworth Institute of Art, where she would finally live out her dream of becoming an antiques appraiser for a major auction house. All she had worked so hard to achieve was finally within her reach. So why would she kill herself?

A man who was supposed to be her salvation . . .

Maggie Sparkes arrives in New York City to pack up what’s left of her best friend’s belongings after a suicide that has left everyone stunned. The police have deemed the evidence conclusive: Celine got into bed, downed a lethal cocktail of pills and vodka, and never woke up. But when Maggie discovers a scandalous photograph in a lock box hidden in Celine’s apartment, she begins asking questions. Questions about the man Celine fell in love with. The man she never told anyone about, not even Maggie. The man Celine believed would change her life.

Until he became her ruin.

On the hunt for evidence that will force the police to reopen the case, Maggie uncovers more than she bargained for about Celine’s private life—and inadvertently puts herself on the radar of a killer. A killer who will stop at nothing to keep his crimes undiscovered.
My Review:

The concept of this book and its execution felt pretty generic to me although the writing was not bad.  I love suspense and thrillers, which is why I wanted to read this and thought there would be some huge twist, but this one wasn't very suspenseful or thrilling for me.  The author pretty quickly guided you into figuring out this "mystery" and it was so classic and obvious.  The problem was that there wasn't enough else that was unique in the story to drive it past such an obvious mystery.  I also was pretty bored reading this book -- the MC, Maggie, should be very likeable since she is a trust fund baby who spends her life helping the poor and has taken time off from her work in Africa to try and find her best friend's killer.  That being said, Maggie was a magnet for stupid decisions and judging her best friend.  While it is true that it turned out that she really didn't know her best friend like she thought she did, I couldn't help but feel that she was so judgmental when she found out the truth about Celine and focused on making sure everyone knew how amazing she (Maggie) was to eschew her personal wealth and try to make a difference.

I will say that Maggie was very focused on, and truly did want to find out, what happened to Celine but she wasn't very smart.  Her two love interests, and I do hesitate to call them that but I'm not sure what else to call them (without spoiling the book), were utterly awful.  It was hard to imagine that someone like Maggie would have been so turned around and such a bad judge of character.  My dislike of the main characters in the book (with the exception of Ruby, the elderly nosy next door neighbor and mystery writer) ultimately made this drop from 3 stars to 2.5 stars -- I just didn't see any sense in villainizing the victim (Celine) in this book.  Depression and/or addiction do not make someone a bad person, but the ending of the book seemed to take away from the fact that Celine was a victim.  The ending was definitely unsatisfying for me and I hated how many loose strings were wrapped up in the epilogue.

On the plus side, I would recommend this to someone wanting to ease into the thriller/suspense genre from pure contemporary romance.  I would also recommend this to fans of the Inside Out series by Lisa Renee Jones (I really liked the first book in that series but it went downhill for me after that) -- there are a lot of similarities between the two.  I also think fans of the Consequences series by Aleatha Romig would like this one.  In this sort of genre, I really loved Swerve by Vicki Pettersson.  He Will Be My Ruin is scheduled for release on February, 2, 2016,  and you can purchase HERE!

  1. I'm sorry this was such a disappointment for you, Eva. I get annoyed when the mystery is obvious too. And the TWO love interests thing is very frustrating. :/
Anyways, I'm still holding out some hope because I've enjoyed her books a lot in the past, but I know what to expect.
    Lovely review, Eva!

  3. Oh dear, sorry to see this one didn't work for you, Eva. I just received my review copy and I'm excited to dive in to it. I'm already a fan of Tucker's writing and have been interested to see what she does with the romantic suspense genre. But I'm with you, when I dislike the main characters, there's really nowhere to go but down. Fingers crossed that I enjoy it more!

    1. Thanks Tanya! I'm a huge romantic suspense fan so perhaps I'm more critical than I should be since I love the genre so much! I hope you enjoy it!!

  4. I can understand why it's a dissapointing read. If the mystery is obvious, that annoys me endlessly.

  5. Too bad you didn't enjoy this book that much! :( It's a shame and I hope your next book is full of more suspense! I've been seeing this author bouncing around the blogging world like crazy so maybe it was just a bad read for you but I'm sure your next one will be better! <3

  6. Oh, wow. I'm sorry you didn't enjoy this one. I have the last suspense series from Tucker to read, and I know it had a lot of mixed reviews, so I've put it off. I hope you have a winner next go around. :)

  7. Yikes, I'm sad you didn't like this. I like her books a lot but it is super annoying when the mystery in mystery books is not... a mystery.

  8. I'm reading this one right now. Well, I'm only like 8% in right now. I hope I end up liking it more than you did. But if the mystery is pretty obvious, this could go downhill quickly. And if this is a suspense novel, but it's not suspenseful, then that's a problem. I'll report back!

  9. I'll come back and read this after I finish reading and writing my review, but I'm worried seeing your 2.5 stars! Uh-oh! I hope I like it better, Eva!

    1. It definitely could just be me! I've seen a ton of great reviews -- I have high standards for this genre, since it's my favorite

    2. Not just you, and I have a feeling once more reviews come in we won't be the only ones who feel this way, Eva. I completely agree with your review. I didn't end up liking Maggie, either which was ironic considering she was such do-gooder. She just came off as really self-centered to me. The "romances" were a complete disappointment. I did like Ruby, Doug and Zac. I was hoping I'd like Grady. I did find the mystery a little more than you did. I'm rating this the same, though. Excellent review!

I love this trope, sub-genre, setting: My Best Friend's Brother/My Brother's Best Friend

I Love This Trope, Sub-Genre, Setting is a new feature on my blog in which I discuss a trope, sub-genre or setting that I love and tell you about books that are shining examples of said trope, sub-genre or setting.  Feel free to play along and please let me know about your favorite books in this realm and whether you like this trope, sub-genre and/or setting as much as I do! Today I am spotlighting the trope of:  My Best Friend's Brother/My Brother's Best Friend , which I would define as any book where the heroine either has a crush on or falls for her brother's best friend or her best friend's brother. I have to confess that I love this trope in nearly all of its iterations!  I have a younger brother so I never got to crush on any of his friends but it's fun reading about that and it's equally as fun as reading about falling for your best friend's brother -- instant sisters!  I know there are a ton

Conversations With Myself (& Hopefully You): ARC Greed

This discussion is inspired by my feelings lately when reading and reviewing ARCs versus the feelings I had when I requested those same ARCs: ARC GREED ARC greed -- have we all experienced this?  What I even mean by this term is that I sometimes feel overwhelmed when looking at Netgalley and Edelweiss and  I sometimes over-request, if only because I can!  I get greedy when I see all the new and shiny ARCs available and I will sometimes request things that have even a hint of interest for me, not necessarily focusing only on those books that I really, really want.  The problem with this over-requesting and with getting greedy with requesting (and receiving) ARCs is when it comes time to read and review these ARCs.  Last month and this month, I have looked at my ARCs with a release date in each respective month and I just haven't wanted to read any of them.  I need to start asking myself -- If I was immediately approved for this ARC, would I read it right thi
