Rec' Me Something Good! (1)

So last week one of my absolute favorite bloggers, Nereyda at Mostly YA Obsessed, posted her first Rec Me Something Good, in which she asked for recommendations for fun (i.e. no drama) NA reads.  The idea is simple but perfect -- you describe the type of book you're in the mood to read (based on genre, author, etc.) as well as books you've previously read and enjoyed (or not enjoyed) in that genre, etc. and let your readers recommend something they think you will like based on the category!  I have been in the mood for something specific so I am (with permission) stealing this idea from Nereyda so you can recommend something good to me today!

What I’m looking for:

I am in the mood to start a series in which the characters do not get together in the span of one book -- so, a true series not the new "series" that everyone seems to be writing that are truly just a string of books about every character under the sun from the first book (I'm looking at you Abbi Glines).  I'm thinking of my all time favorites -- The Love Me With Lies series by Tarryn Fisher and the Georgina Kincaid series by Richelle Mead.  It can be YA, NA or adult and any genre (truly) as long as it's a good story where HEA doesn't come easily (or maybe at all) and definitely not in the span of one book.  I've read (and semi enjoyed) the Fever series by Karen Marie Moning and the first four books in the Outlander series so it could definitely be in those veins although neither of those series were favorites of mine.  The Just One Day series by Gayle Forman and the Brenna Blixen series by Liz Reinhardt are also great examples of  YA/NA series that fits this description.

What I’m avoiding:

I prefer not to read love triangles unless they are really well executed and with purpose (think the opposite of The Dark Elements series by JLA) not just to string the series along in an artificial way.

Any Recs?

Help Me Out, I'm desperate!

  1. Aw, I'm so happy you did this Eva! Hmmn, let's see...
Have you read the Guards of the Shadowlands series by Sarah Fine? What about Caroline & West by Robin York? It's an NA two book contemp series about the same couple... Also, I love The Demon Trappers series by Jana Oliver, it's YA/UF and awesome. Everything else I can think of, you've already read. I'll have to ask Megan if there is anything like Love Me With Lies although I doubt it...

My friend Nick recommends the Kate Daniel series, Angelfall, Weird Girls series by Cecy Robson. Not sure if you've read any of those yet.

Hope you find something good Eva!

  2. OMG I'm seriously NO help with what you're looking for, I'm sorry. :( I read mostly standalones, so I'm drawing a blank trying to think of a series that would fit your criteria.

I LOVE that you posted this today!! Nereyda is GENIUS for coming up with this topic!! I think ALL of us could use a good rec every now and then, so this is the best thing EVER!! :)

Good luck, sweets! I hope you get some wonderful recs. I'll be stopping back to see what you find. :)

  3. Have you read Clipped Wings by Helena Hunting? I really loved them but I don't know if it's exactly what you're looking for but hmmmm, the Falling Kingdom series by Morgan Rhodes (but it's not completed), Manwhore by Katy Evans is another two book series. Have you read Richelle Mead's YA books? I don't know why I'm having so much trouble thinking of books cause I know I've read books that you're asking for I'm just drawing a blank!

  5. I immediately thought of The Others series by Anne Bishop: Written in Red, Murder of Crows and Vision in Silver. The series is ongoing, but I just LOVE it!! It's my favorite fantasy series out there right now. The romance is very subtle so I find myself picking through every interaction with Simon and Meg. I highly recommend it!

  7. If I'm repeating this, I'm sorry (didn't read all of the comments), but what about The Lumatere Chronicles by Melina Marchetta? Only 3 books, but they're big ones! Main characters come and go depending on whose "book" it is, and you get to know SO many people/families!

I love this trope, sub-genre, setting: My Best Friend's Brother/My Brother's Best Friend

I Love This Trope, Sub-Genre, Setting is a new feature on my blog in which I discuss a trope, sub-genre or setting that I love and tell you about books that are shining examples of said trope, sub-genre or setting.  Feel free to play along and please let me know about your favorite books in this realm and whether you like this trope, sub-genre and/or setting as much as I do! Today I am spotlighting the trope of:  My Best Friend's Brother/My Brother's Best Friend , which I would define as any book where the heroine either has a crush on or falls for her brother's best friend or her best friend's brother. I have to confess that I love this trope in nearly all of its iterations!  I have a younger brother so I never got to crush on any of his friends but it's fun reading about that and it's equally as fun as reading about falling for your best friend's brother -- instant sisters!  I know there are a ton

Conversations With Myself (& Hopefully You): ARC Greed

This discussion is inspired by my feelings lately when reading and reviewing ARCs versus the feelings I had when I requested those same ARCs: ARC GREED ARC greed -- have we all experienced this?  What I even mean by this term is that I sometimes feel overwhelmed when looking at Netgalley and Edelweiss and  I sometimes over-request, if only because I can!  I get greedy when I see all the new and shiny ARCs available and I will sometimes request things that have even a hint of interest for me, not necessarily focusing only on those books that I really, really want.  The problem with this over-requesting and with getting greedy with requesting (and receiving) ARCs is when it comes time to read and review these ARCs.  Last month and this month, I have looked at my ARCs with a release date in each respective month and I just haven't wanted to read any of them.  I need to start asking myself -- If I was immediately approved for this ARC, would I read it right thi
