To All the 2016 Debuts I've Loved

Dear 2016 Debuts,
You've really surprised me.  I used to not really read debuts until or unless I saw a lot of trusted bloggers raving about them.  This year, I've taken a chance and tried so many of you and I've been elated! You've all been over 3.5 Stars for me and many of you have been among my favorite books of this year.  You've enchanted me with your stories, your prose, your fresh take on topics both new and not so new.  Some of you have thrilled me, scared me, and made me lose myself in reading your words.  You've made me re-think taking a chance on debuts and I'm so thankful for that.  We've got lots to look forward to in our journey as readers and writers if this is where we've started and nothing could be better!
Thank you 2016 Debuts -- so happy you were written and can't wait to read future works from all of your authors!
Eva

Have you read any of these?  What did you think?
Tell me your favorite 2016 debut, so far!

  1. I went to go look up your review of Relief Map -- mostly because the cover is at odds with the title for me. A book that can leave you tense is a good thing, but it sounds like this one didn't quite know what it was? I haven't read any of these, but I don't even know which of the ones I've read this year are debuts! I shall have to figure that out!

  2. I love this post! I may have to steal the idea. I'm always hesitant about debuts, but sometimes it's so worth it! I want to read The Smell of Other People's Houses. I'm glad to know it made this list!!

  3. Oh my goodness, I've only read one from your list, what is wrong with me? But I agree, it has been a fabulous year for debuts!

  4. Love that you've read so many debuts this year! That's great! Especially since you haven't had any real duds. :) I haven't read that many 2016 debut authors this year but my fave was probably 9 Letters by Blake Austin.

  5. I wish I shared your thoughts, but other than Smelly Houses, this years debuts haven't wowed me. In terms of YA anyway. So glad to see these worked for you!

  6. Darn that is a good lot of debuts - which are all on my TBR - probably in part because of you :) I think my favorite was Frannie and Tru which I know a lot of people didn't love but really resonated with me.

  7. The Hatching and Dancing with the Tiger were so good!!! I was meh on The Girls as you know and I need to read the other ones. I'm glad you enjoyed so many debuts!!

  8. Oh gosh. I haven't read one of these, but I am so far behind and out of the loop. I do have a copy of The Hatching, I should dig into that one.

  9. I haven't read any of them (I'm a bit behind with reading) but all the covers of the books look <3

  10. I really enjoyed Just Fall, too, as you know, Eva. I have a copy of The Hatching and need to get to it soon. I just keep putting it off for some reason. :)

  11. I want to read The Hatching! I regret passing it up. I need to buy it now. I loved The Way to Game the Walk of Shame! It was really good! I'll have to check the rest of the books!

  12. That's awesome that you've loved so many of the debuts this year. Sometimes it can be tough trying a completely author, but it can work out well. I do want to read The Smell of Other People's Houses and The Girls!

  13. I totally agree!! 2016 has been such a good year for debuts!!! At least the ones I've been reading. I SO want to read The Girls. That looks like a "me" book. That Hatching looks good too. I think my fave so far was The Way I Used to Be by Amber Smith. I can't wait to see what that author will come out with next!

  14. I'm happy for you that books you've taken chances on have gone over well! It's always a little bit scary taking a chance on books when you don't have reviews to guide you lol. I haven't read any of these, but I've heard great things about some of them, especially The Hatching, though that is one I would *never* read, haha :-P

  15. I loved The Summer of Supernovas and The Way to Game the Walk of Shame too!! I'm really curious about The Girls. Some of my faves this year have been Summer of Sloane, The Loose Ends List, Scarlett Epstein Hates it Here, and The Distance From A to Z. :)

  16. I usually don't get a chance to read debuts' too often, but what I have read this year has been so good!!! I am pretty curious about Summer of Supernovas and Hatchling.

  17. I've only read Summer of Supernovas from this list but I do agree it's cute! ♥

  18. Love this!! I have only read (but also loved!) Smelly Houses from your list, but am excited to see some books that I am looking forward to reading in your list too! Definitely want to read Summer of Supernovas and Modern Girls ASAP!

Now, how do I pick a favorite debut? That is like Sophie's Choice, Eva! I mean... the ONLY book that made my "elite favorites" this year is a debut, Jeff Zentner's The Serpent King, so I guess he wins. But I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the OTHER favorites that were debuts so... these were all hits: The Girl From Everywhere, The Love that Split the World, The Crown's Game... yep, I think those are my favorite debuts! (The 5 stars, anyway!) Such a great post!

  19. I've heard of most of these, and have read The Girls. I adored it! I love reading debuts. That way I don't go into it with any expectations of the author. It's all new and fresh :)

  20. I've only read one of these (Summer of Supernovas), but I agree that there are lots of things to love about debuts!! I've found LOTS of new authors I love by reading their debuts!

  21. Good lord. I've not read a single book on your list. Clearly I fail. My favorite 2016 debut so far is probably The Distance from A to Z by Natalie Blitt. I'm sure I've read other debuts, but I don't really keep track of them!

  22. I've only read a handful of debuts this year but so far it's been a better reading year for me than last year!

I'm Thinking of Ending Things by Iain Reid

I love this trope, sub-genre, setting: My Best Friend's Brother/My Brother's Best Friend

I Love This Trope, Sub-Genre, Setting is a new feature on my blog in which I discuss a trope, sub-genre or setting that I love and tell you about books that are shining examples of said trope, sub-genre or setting.  Feel free to play along and please let me know about your favorite books in this realm and whether you like this trope, sub-genre and/or setting as much as I do! Today I am spotlighting the trope of:  My Best Friend's Brother/My Brother's Best Friend , which I would define as any book where the heroine either has a crush on or falls for her brother's best friend or her best friend's brother. I have to confess that I love this trope in nearly all of its iterations!  I have a younger brother so I never got to crush on any of his friends but it's fun reading about that and it's equally as fun as reading about falling for your best friend's brother -- instant sisters!  I know there are a ton

Conversations With Myself (& Hopefully You): ARC Greed

This discussion is inspired by my feelings lately when reading and reviewing ARCs versus the feelings I had when I requested those same ARCs: ARC GREED ARC greed -- have we all experienced this?  What I even mean by this term is that I sometimes feel overwhelmed when looking at Netgalley and Edelweiss and  I sometimes over-request, if only because I can!  I get greedy when I see all the new and shiny ARCs available and I will sometimes request things that have even a hint of interest for me, not necessarily focusing only on those books that I really, really want.  The problem with this over-requesting and with getting greedy with requesting (and receiving) ARCs is when it comes time to read and review these ARCs.  Last month and this month, I have looked at my ARCs with a release date in each respective month and I just haven't wanted to read any of them.  I need to start asking myself -- If I was immediately approved for this ARC, would I read it right thi
