Top Ten Adult/NA Books of 2013

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by the fab ladies at The Broke and the Bookish!

1.  Dirty Red (Love Me With Lies #2) and Thief (Love Me With Lies #3)
                                                              by Tarryn Fisher

The Opportunist (#1) topped my list last year and I can easily say that Dirty Red and Thief were my favorites this year by a landslide.  Thief was the perfect ending to this series and I did not put it down until I was finished-- it was so good that not only did not want it to end but I wanted it to last forever.  This is a series I will re-read every year.  Seriously, no books compete with this series for me.  Full review of Dirty Red here.
2. The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt

The Secret History may well be my favorite book of all time and The Goldfinch was well worth the long wait.  Donna Tartt writes like no one else and I could not believe what I was reading while I was reading it.  Magical!!

3.  Left Drowning by Jessica Park

Jessica Park does it again with Left Drowning -- an absolutely beautiful and poetic NA that is everything I wish that genre could be at all times.  I loved this book even though parts of it nearly killed me from longing.

4.  The Foxhole Court (All for the Game #1) and The Raven King (All for the Game #2) by Nora Sakavic

I know I keep raving about these books but they really are THAT good -- unlike anything I have ever read before and I can't wait to read the third and final book next year!

5.  Night Film by Marisha Pessl

Special Topics in Calamity Physics is another of my all time favorites and Night Film was an absolutely incredible follow-up.  A mystery in which you can just lose yourself in the language.

6. Just My Luck (Escape to New Zealand #5) by Rosalind James

Another series I can't stop raving about, I know, but it is just that good and Just My Luck, the most recent book, is my favorite of the series!

7. Hopeless (Hopeless #1) by Colleen Hoover
Another amazing series from Colleen Hoover.  I obsessed over Slammed and Point of Retreat last year and Hopeless was even better.  Full review here.
8. Unleashing Mr. Darcy by Teri Wilson

One of my favorite P&P retelling ever! Full review here.

9. More than Rivals by Mary Whitney

Another author that made my list last year.  I love Mary Whitney's effortless writing that combines romance and politics.  Beside Your Heart by Mary Whitney was another one of my favorites this year, too!

10. Sins and Needles (The Artists Trilogy #1) by Karina Halle

Loved the first book in this series -- so unique, heart-stopping and I really loved the incorporation/mood-setting of the music references.  Full review here.

TOP 10 YA BOOKS OF 2013

1. Things I Can't Forget (Hundred Oaks #3) by Miranda Kenneally

Without question, my favorite YA books of 2013! I loved the story, the complexity, the struggle of the characters and, basically, how Miranda Kenneally was able to perfectly capture how to get over yourself sometimes. This series is PHENOMENAL.  Seriously.  I'm already ready to read this one again. Full review here
2. Origin (Lux #4) by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Not what I was expecting but everything I always wanted from this series!  I cannot wait to read Opposition (Lux #5) but I do NOT want this series to end -- JLA is amazing!!

3. Flat-Out Matt (Flat-Out Love #1.5) by Jessica Park

The short companion novella to my favorite book of last year was simply perfect.   Full review here
4. Just One Day and Just One Year by Gayle Forman

Beautiful, beautiful series by Gayle Forman about self-discovery.  The second and final book was even better than the first!

5. The Dream Thieves (The Raven Cycle #2) by Maggie Stiefvater

Another series that made my list last year and Dream Thieves was even better than The Raven Boys!  I wish I could live in whatever state of mind occurs for Maggie Steifvater to write these books -- absolutely sublime!

6. Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell

Loved this one so much -- can't wait to read more from this author next year!
7. Fall of Night (The Morganville Vampires #14) and Daylighters (The Morganville Vampires #15) by Rachel Caine
Amazing conclusion to one of my favorite series of all time.  I miss you already, Claire!

8. Sweet Peril (The Sweet Trilogy #2) by Wendy Higgins

I just started this series this year and its conclusion, Sweet Reckoning, is my most anticipated book of 2014.  I absolutely adore Anna and Kai -- their journey in Sweet Peril was unstoppable!
9. The Indigo Spell (Bloodlines #3) and The Fiery Heart (Bloodlines #4) by Richelle Mead

Seriously, I've read everything Richelle Mead has ever written and she never disappoints! The Indigo Spell and The Fiery Heart were even better than the first two books in this series and I am dying to know what will happen next.
10. Boundless (Unearthly #3) by Cynthia Hand

Another great series conclusion -- perfect ending, perfect build-up!

Waiting on Wednesday: Don't Look Back by Jennifer L. Armentrout

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that you are eagerly anticipating.

Today, I am waiting on Don't Look Back by Jennifer L. Armentrout!

Samantha is a stranger in her own life. Until the night she disappeared with her best friend, Cassie, everyone said Sam had it all-popularity, wealth, and a dream boyfriend.

Sam has resurfaced, but she has no recollection of who she was or what happened to her that night. As she tries to piece together her life from before, she realizes it's one she no longer wants any part of. The old Sam took "mean girl" to a whole new level, and it's clear she and Cassie were more like best enemies. Sam is pretty sure that losing her memories is like winning the lottery. She's getting a second chance at being a better daughter, sister, and friend, and she's falling hard for Carson Ortiz, a boy who has always looked out for her-even if the old Sam treated him like trash.

But Cassie is still missing, and the facts about what happened to her that night isn't just buried deep inside of Sam's memory-someone else knows, someone who wants to make sure Sam stays quiet. All Sam wants is the truth, and if she can unlock her clouded memories of that fateful night, she can finally move on. But what if not remembering is the only thing keeping Sam alive?
As you all probably already know, JLA is an instant buy for me!  I will read anything and everything she writes.  Don't Look Back sounds creepy but also enchanting -- I can't wait to read this book!  It is scheduled for release on April 15, 2014, and you can pre-order HERE.

Top Ten New-To-Me Authors I Read In 2013

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by the fab ladies at The Broke and the Bookish!

1.  I recently started the Debutante Dropout Mystery series by Susan McBride and I love it!  Sometimes there is nothing better than finding a new mystery series!

2.  For those of you that are contemporary romance fans like I am, you need to read anything and everything by Rosalind James!!  I started the Escape to New Zealand series (um New Zealand and hot rugby players?!) after one of my BFF gifted me the first book and I have devoured all of Ms. James' books since.  Can't wait for more!!

3.  Another new to me author this year is Kristen Ashley and I am sorry I waited even this long to start reading her books!  I am IN LOVE with the Rock Chick series -- so smart, funny and perfect -- definitely the series I laugh at loud the most while reading!

4.  I'm pretty sure everyone participating in TTT today is listing Rainbow Rowell but there's a reason for that -- her books are just that good.

5.  One author on today's list that I am definitely late to the game on is Cynthia Hand.  I read her Unearthly series this year and could not put it down!  Highly recommend for those that like YA fantasy/para series.

6.  Another new contemporary romance author that I discovered this year is Julie James!  As an attorney, I typically cringe at books involving the law because they usually get it SO wrong.  However, Julie's FBI / US Attorney series is so, so good and accurate!!

7.  Wendy Higgins!!  Again, I am late to her books but I really love The Sweet Trilogy and can't wait for the last book.

8.  I'm so grateful to the ladies at I Love YA Fiction for turning me on to Nora Sakavic!  The All For The Game series is the most unexpected, raw NA series out there.  Great male POV and no romance but an incredible journey through introspection, guilt, redemption and relationships.

9.  My initial assessment of the first book I read in the Stewart Realty series by Liz Crowe read: "Definitely unlike anything I've ever read! The ending left me more confused than ever but I can't wait to read more.  Very fast paced-- almost too much so but never boring and never gratuitous."  Highly recommend if you want a steamy, frustrating and unique set of interconnected love stories.

10.  I have saved the BEST for last today.  Miranda Kenneally is my favorite author that I started to reading this year.  When I post my favorite books for 2013 shortly, you will see that Things I Can't Forget tops that list.  I am absolutely enamored with the Hundred Oaks series and I believe that everyone should be reading these books.

Review: Unleashing Mr. Darcy by Teri Wilson

Unleashing Mr. Darcy by Teri Wilson

Blurb from Goodreads:

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single woman teetering on the verge of thirty must be in want of a husband.

Not true for Manhattanite Elizabeth Scott. Instead of planning a walk down the aisle, she's crossing the pond with the only companion she needs; her darling dog, Bliss. Caring for a pack of show dogs in England seems the perfect distraction from the scandal that ruined her teaching career, and her reputation, in New York. What she doesn't count on is an unstoppable attraction to billionaire dog breeder Donovan Darcy. The London tycoon's a little bit arrogant, a whole lot sexy, and the chemistry between them is disarming. When passion is finally unleashed, might Elizabeth hope to take home more than a blue ribbon?
My Review:

As a huge Jane Austen fan, I've read countless Pride & Prejudice retellings.  Some are continuations of the story, some are modern retellings and still others presuppose what would have happened if certain plot points in P&P never actually happened.  However, I can easily say that I have never read in a modern retelling in which Mr. Darcy and Ms. Bennett are dog show participants.  Don't let this seemingly odd premise throw you, however, because the tension, pride and prejudice of Darcy and Elizabeth are truly perfection in Unleashing Mr. Darcy by Teri Wilson!  I loved learning more about dog shows and reading about Elizabeth and Darcy in this unique setting -- most of the book takes place in London and the descriptions were wonderful!  Definitely one of my favorite reads of the year.

I highly, highly recommend this to anyone that likes contemporary romances and, especially, to fans of Jane Austen.  This retelling is unique and absolutely lovely!
The mood spoiled by a heaping dose of reality, he withdrew his hand.  And as they waited for the check, they sat with their fingertips little more than a whisper apart, the air swirling with the fresh scent of ripe oranges and unwanted affection.
This book is scheduled to be released on January 1, 2014 and you can Pre-Order Here!*

Swoon Thursday: Fate Succumbs (Timber Wolves Trilogy #3) by Tammy Blackwell

Swoon Thursday is a meme hosted by YABound.

From the book you’re currently reading, or one you just finished, tell us what made you SWOON. What got your heart pounding, your skin tingling, and your stomach fluttering.

Today, I am spotlighting Fate Succumbs (Timber Wolves Trilogy #3) by Tammy Blackwell, the third and final book in the Timber Wolves Trilogy.  I just finished this series and it was so, so good!  I can't wait to read the recently release spin-off, Fragile Brilliance!  And now, on to the swoon:
"Why are you wearing that face?" he asked.
I touched my cheek.  Thanks to my mom and Gramma Hagan, I was starting to gain weight, but my cheekbone still stuck out a bit too far.
"This is the face God gave me," I said, trying to hide the hurt in my voice.  "I can't exactly take it off and put it on a shelf."
"I'm talking about this."  A finger brushed against my mouth.  "And this."  He tapped the corner of each eye.
"Those came with the face.  It was a package deal."
"Did they come all scrunched up like that?  Because, in my experience, you only look like that when you're stressed or frustrated."  He huffed out a breath and rubbed the back of his head.  "Is it because I'm here?  I should have called you first.  Sorry.  I just wanted to surprise you."
Something in my chest felt warm, probably the last little piece of my heart melting for him.
"I'm frustrated because I want to touch you so bad I'm literally hurting my hand to prevent it, and I'm stressed because I don't know how you'll react when I lose control."
[He]* looked at me like I was an alien for about half a second before crawling over me, one hand finding the back of my head to drag my lips to his.  He was enthustiastic in his kiss, and I responded in kind.  I didn't realize how much I missed the taste and feel of him until he was in my arms.
*Taking out the name so there are no spoilers!

Highly recommend this series for those who like paranormal YA!  I remember initially hearing about this series on another blog (can't remember whose) and that's just one of the many reasons why blogging is so great.  Who are you swooning over this week? Link up your Swoon below!

Waiting on Wednesday: Sweet Reckoning (The Sweet Trilogy #3) by Wendy Higgins

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that you are eagerly anticipating.

Today, I am waiting on Sweet Reckoning by Wendy Higgins!

It’s time.

Evil is running rampant and sweet Anna Whitt is its target. Nobody knows when or how the Dukes will strike, but Anna and her Nephilim allies will do anything necessary to rid the earth of the demons and their oppressive ways.

The stakes are higher than ever, and Anna is determined that the love she feels will be her strength, not a liability. But trying to protect the ones she loves while running for her life and battling demonic forces proves to be perilous—especially as faces are changing and trust is fleeting. When the Duke of Lust sends Anna’s great love, Kaidan Rowe, to work against her, Anna must decide how much she’s prepared to risk.

In the most sensual and fast-paced installment yet, Sweet Reckoning brings all the beloved Neph together one last time to fight for their freedom.
I am SO, SO ready for this book and the conclusion of this series although I don't want it to be over!  Cannot wait to finds out with Anna and Kai and all of their friends.  Wendy Higgins just tweeted this the other day and I swear my heart stopped:
I can't wait to read this book!  It is scheduled for release on April 29, 2014, and you can pre-order HERE.
